In 1815, the Surveyor General of the United States was a man named Edward Tiffin, the former governor of Ohio. In that year, he ordered a survey of the Michigan Territory at the request of Congress, who were granting bounty lands to the veterans of the War of 1812. This survey wasn’t completed – the survey crews reported that the territory was an “interminable swamp” and not fit for agriculture or settlement. Consequently, the bounty lands were awarded to other territories. This probably had more to do with the survey being conducted in the spring and summer of 1815, which was probably not the time of year to go stomping through the woods of an unsettled Michigan.
In 1816,this survey was begun, and successfully completed. It spurred the newly appointed governor of the Michigan Territory, Lewis Cass, to begin active land sales and settlement into the new territory.
The early survey of the interior lines of Oakland County ordered by Edward Tiffin and carried out by Joseph Wampler, Samuel Carpenter, and others. This survey made early land sales in Oakland County possible.
